Myanmar
Myanmar is the largest country in the South East Asian peninsula covering the same area as Great Britain and France combined. Independent travel is difficult but the country offers great rewards for those keen to discover one of the least visited corners of Asia. The Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon is like stepping back in time. The country has so much to offer to teh traveller who is open to new experiences and the tranquility of a by-gone era. The spectacular Pagoda's and temples are one of the main attractions.
Mountains and jungle cover three-quarters of Myanmar and there are over 135 ethnic groups living in the country. Flat plains and wide rivers characterise the geography of the centre of the country while mountain ranges run along the Thai border up to the Himalayas in the east.
Myanmar's main river is the 2,000-km long Ayeyarwady River, formerly known as the Irrawaddy, around which most of the country's best farmland is found. One of the best ways to experience this by enjoying an overnight cruise on the Pandaw.
